Our term two Prep inquiry allowed students to explore the notion that there are food and lifestyle choices that makes us healthy and also there are choices we can make to remain safe in different environments. Students documented their own eating habits by looking in their lunch boxes and sorting their foods into different groups.
They were also introduced to the healthy eating wheel which groups foods according to their nutritional content. To document their understandings of these food groups, students were able to organise magazine cut outs of foods into a Venn diagram. The healthy eating component of the inquiry culminated in a healthy lunch which involved each class coming up with a shopping list and then walking down to nearby Martin Street to buy their ingredients. They then assisted in making a fantastic healthy lunch which was enjoyed by all. Check out this short digital story of JSA's healthy lunch journey.
The safety component to our inquiry involved a range of incursions to stimulate lots of awareness of different safety aspects. We had a visit from some fire fighters to demonstrate what to do if there is a fire in your home and also what to do if you catch on fire. As a means of linking the community to our learning the Prep's decided to showcase their safety understandings in the form of short movies. These movies cover fire safety, crossing the road safely, safety in the kitchen and being safe in the playground. Here are our movies, enjoy!

Circle Time is timetabled in the Senior School C.A.B. twice weekly. It is a restorative justice practise activity which aims to unify students, allow class mates to get to know and understand each other and to encourage students to show respect for the many differences that occur in individuals.
Circle Time activities are designed to give students the opportunity to express their feelings in a non-judgemental environment. Each session involves a mixture of students from other home groups. In each home room, the students are formed in a circle, to ensure inclusivity, and begin the activity by giving a high five, holding eye contact and saying a hearty good morning to the classmate on their left.
Activities are varied and range from the hilarious to the serious. They may also involve activity cards especially designed for such forums. During Monday's 'Circle' thoughts about Cyber Bullying were discussed in one circle, "I would like to find out about..." was a sentence starter in another circle and a game of "One to Ten" in the third circle (Ask your child to explain this one, which is also done in Mandarin)
We are constantly astounded and delighted by the increasing feeling of unity, the honesty of the students and the 'airing' of problems by our students. Circle Time is incredibly popular and the students are eager to participate; so too are the teachers. We can literally 'feel' the connectedness amongst the group. If you would like to know more about this activity please ask any of the Senior School teachers.
The EPS School Song
|
In Term Two, the Grade 5/6 students completed a music composition project. Working in small groups, students composed their own short song consisting of a basic composition format (verses, chorus, bridge). Students used various melodic (piano, guitar, glockenspiels) and non-melodic (drums, shakers, claves) instruments to accompany their pieces along with voice and dance. The students produced creative, catchy and original compositions.
On Monday 3 August 2009, Elsternwick Primary School hosted an Opening Ceremony to celebrate several re-developments throughout the school grounds. During the ceremony the Grade 3&4 Choir enthusiastically sang "Better Than" by the John Butler Trio. Several Red Notes woodwind and string students featured as soloists during the morning tea (Josh Synan, Samuel Lloyd and Mietta Adams) and the Grade 5&6 Percussion Ensemble entertained guests with an original toe-tapping composition (inspired by Samba music).
Bloke's Breakfast Concert
The first Red Notes Recital was held on Wednesday 19th August, 2009. It featured several group and solo performances and was a fantastic instrumental showcase by the students. A range of musical styles (classical, jazz, blues, folk and contemporary) were included in the programme. Below are some photos from the event.
Whole grade works of art which were displayed at the EPS Art Show on Thursday 29th October. The canvases are currently on display in the junior school classrooms and grades 3/6 are on display in the art room.
Physical education complements education in virtue and knowledge. The Physical Education and Recreational Sport programs provide students the opportunity to experience a variety of activities and, in turn, to appreciate the importance of the balance of a healthy mind and body. Specifically, we hope to introduce students to a wide range of lifetime sports so that they may benefit from them throughout their adult lives. Our programs offer both individual and team activities; and our location being what it is, there is an emphasis on the out-of-doors.

Our mandarin program has been created by experienced and bilingual teaching staff. The program is fun and engaging, it captures the attention, interest and enthusiasm of your child whilst laying the foundations for fluency in Mandarin as they grow and develop.
