Frequently Asked Questions about EPS Redevelopments

Q. When is the gym starting and the expected completion date?
A. The gym is expected to start after the portables are shifted over the school holidays. A brief construction program is:
  • compound erected by 7/09/2009
  • slab poured by 30/11/2009
  • structural steel frame by 22/01/2010
  • roof by 31/03/2010
  • services and fit out by 17/06/2010
  • testing, defects and handover on 19/08/2010
Q. Will the gym include a car park?
A. At this stage there was no provision for a car park to be constructed as part of the building program. We are investigating whether the external landscaping provision will cover some of the costs of a car park. Discussions between builders, project managers and school council will follow once there has been a determination on landscaping.

Q. What will be the level of community usage of the gym, who will manage this - policy around this including usage times, planning permits?
A. School council will need to consider this in 2010. The gym won't effectively be in operation till the start of term 4 2010.

Q. What will happen to the oval after the building is completed?
A. The schools landscaping plan will need to be revised in 2011.

Q. How will the gym affect students playing at recess and lunch times both now during construction and afterwards?
A. Construction fencing will be standard 3 metre height around the site preventing student access to the construction area. The currently oval will effectively be reduced by half for 4 terms till 19/08/2010 and the teaching staff will manage the student playing zones early in term 4 this year. The junior oval will be used for Prep - Year Two ball games and the senior oval for Years 3-6 ball games. Areas and equipment surrounding the ovals will at this stage be shared. All decisions communicated in school newsletter and at assembly.

Q. Who will equip the gym when it's completed and what equipment?
A. This is still under investigation. The gym comes with court markings and rings although at this stage we are not sure if the rings are installed. All other equipment is provided by the school.

Q. Will the gym contain an office for the Music and PE teachers?
A. There is a designated staffroom with data and power in the complex that has the capacity to be an office for the PE/music teachers.

Q. Will 'Outside School Hours Care' use the facility? If so what will happen to the cottage?
A. We have no plans at this stage.

Q. What landscaping will be around the building?
A. Landscaping is still at the planning stage.

Q. What will happen to the temporary toilets during construction?
A. The temporary toilets will be located near perimeter fencing in line with the current sewerage connections and will be available to students during school and recess times.

Q. What will happen if a ball goes over the building fence?
A. Students are prevented from entering the construction zone and balls will be collected and returned on regular basis to the school.

Q. Will there be another opening ceremony?
A. Yes, near the end of term 4 2010.

Q. What will happen to the old hall?
A. No plans at this stage - the old Brickwood Hall is part of a Stage 2 development to be funded in future years.

Q. Are there plans for the gym and where are they displayed?
A. Plans are available in PDF files. They are listed below.

     Ground Floor Plan
     Sections Plan
     Elevations Plan
     Interior Elevations Plan
     Internal Elevations Plan
     Indicative Furniture Plan

Q. What are the traffic issues during and after construction?
A. Site deliveries will be a topic for the first site meeting in October 2009.

School Policies

Student Attendance

All children of school age are required to be in full time attendance. Teachers’ mark attendance rolls twice each day [am/pm].

Student Absences

If a child is unwell and will not be attending school please telephone the office to advise. A message will be put through the appropriate classroom teacher. On return to school parents should send a note.

Late Arrivals

Parents/guardians must accompany children to the front office and sign a child arriving to school late in the Late Arrivals Book. The child will be given a late pass to take to class and give to the teacher.

Early Departures

If a child is leaving the school early a note should be sent to the classroom teacher on the morning and then the parent/guardian should come to the office to sign the child out. On completion of the required slip the parent/guardian should take the blue tear off slip to take to the classroom where they will collect the child.

Anti-bullying

Elsternwick PS is committed to offering an educational setting that allows and encourages the full participation of students in an environment free from bullying and harassment.

Sun Smart

Elsternwick Primary School is a registered Sun Smart School. We have a number of practices that include the compulsory wearing of an approved hat during terms 1 and 4, the provision of sunscreen in classrooms and in the PE program and shade protection in the school yard. For further information on the program please click here.

For a full list of our school policies please go to the school policies page.

School Nurse

The school contracts a nurse from Rally Healthcare to provide a range of services for children attending the school. The daily nurse hours are from 11:00 am - 2:30 pm. The services include attending to student injuries, head lice prevention program, administering medication, and managing student asthma prevention programs. This initiative is funded each year through the parent contributions. For further information about the service please click here.

School Uniform Price List

Our school has an attractive green, white and red coloured student uniform that is bright, distinctive, functional and hard wearing. The school uniform shop, which is run by parent volunteers, opens each Tuesday morning from 8:30 am till 9:30 am.

Alternatively prepaid orders can be left at the school office during the week. Distribution of the items is then made to the pupil in their class room.

The shop sells both new and second hand items.

Lost Property

Lost property is now located inside the Brickwood Hall and is open during school hours. Parents are encouraged to check these lost property lockers on a regular basis. We strongly advise all parents to clearly label all items particularly school uniform clothing with your child’s name. Labels that are stitched on last the test of time.
